Solidarity by Legal Design with Hallie Jay Pope – Legal Design Thinking IRL

Solidarity by legal design seeks to dismantle the legal system and processes and create a new one that supports the needs and rights of everyone, not just the privileged few. It shifts lawyers from a position of advocacy to lawyers who work alongside and share their power with the people most impacted and act in solidarity with them. People, not just lawyers, can change the legal system.

This week on Legal Design Thinking IRL, I’m excited to have Hallie Jay Pope from New Jersey Legal Design Lab join me to discuss solidarity by legal design and how solidarity is helping people affected by tenancy laws and other legal structures regain agency and access to justice.

Hallie Jay Pope is a legal information designer, educator, and cartoonist. She is the Director of the New Jersey Legal Design Lab, a social transformation laboratory at Seton Hall University School of Law’s Housing Justice Project. The Lab combines law, design, and education to channel power into local movements for housing justice. Before joining Seton Hall, Hallie taught the Creative Advocacy Lab at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law and directed the Graphic Advocacy Project in Brooklyn, New York.

Legal Design Thinking IRL. Episode 70

I’m Hannele Korhonen, founder of Lawyers Design School and host of Legal Design Thinking IRL. Thank you for watching the conversation with Hallie Jay.  Lawyers working alongside people who are unable to access justice is an exciting opportunity for me. Instead of advocating for them, you are dismantling the system to create a new one that works. Solidarity by legal design is something many lawyers will struggle with because they are giving away their power. But are they? Or are we designing a better way to be lawyers?

I’m dedicated to reforming legal practice through human-centered lawyering. Legal Design Thinking IRL encourages lawyers to expand their thinking about their legal work by having experts share fresh, real-world experiences in the law. We talk about Legal Design, design thinking, Contract Design, innovation, and the future of law. We dive into how you can be a joyful, soulful, and change-maker lawyer who delivers legal services your way.

If you enjoyed the talk, join me live on Wednesdays at 8 am ET on LinkedIn. The chat is open for your questions.
